Fatal Head-on Collision near Wilmington: 91-Year-Old Operator Pronounced Dead

WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police announced they are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred late Wednesday morning in the Wilmington area.

Investigators say that on May 31, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a 2002 International attenuator truck was traveling southbound on Kennett Pike south of Buck Road in the left lane of travel. At the time, a 2006 Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on Kennett Pike, north of Briars Lane approaching the intersection of Buck Rd. For unknown reasons, the Ford crossed over the median and entered into the left southbound lane of Kennett Pike and had a head-on collision with the International attenuator truck.

The 91-year-old male operator of the Ford from Wilmington, DE who was properly restrained was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 57-year-old male operator of the International truck was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Southbound Kennett Pike was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.
