Essential Utilities

BRYN MAWR, PA — Essential Utilities (NYSE: WTRG), a leading provider of water, natural gas, and wastewater treatment services, has earned a spot on Newsweek’s list of America’s Most Responsible Companies 2024. This marks the third consecutive year that Essential has been recognized for its commitment to environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) practices.

This accolade is particularly significant for business investors as it signifies the company’s dedication not only to profitability but also to responsible business practices and sustainability. In an era where investors increasingly consider ESG factors alongside financial metrics, Essential’s inclusion in the list underscores its commitment to managing its operations responsibly and sustainably.

Christopher Franklin, Essential Chairman and CEO, said, “Our role as stewards of the environment requires a core focus on operational excellence – and we take it very seriously. It is an honor to be recognized once again by Newsweek for our ongoing commitment to investing in and embracing ESG practices across our footprint.”

Essential’s recent ESG achievements include ambitious reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, achieving diverse supplier and employee commitments, and donating $3.9 million in 2022 to organizations supporting environmental conservation, human services, food insecurity, diversity and inclusion, economic growth and development, education, and emergency services.

The company has successfully reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% from a 2019 baseline, setting it on track to meet its enterprise-wide commitment of a 60% reduction by 2035. This was achieved through extensive pipeline replacement, renewable energy purchasing, and methane leak detection.

The ranking, presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., recognizes the top 600 most responsible companies headquartered in the United States, from a pool of 2,000 public companies across 14 industries. The selection process incorporates sustainability reports, publicly available ESG performance data, and an independent survey of 17,000 U.S. residents.
