WILMINGTON, DE — In a heartwarming tribute celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Delaware Technical Community College’s Stanton and Wilmington campuses honored the City of Wilmington’s Police Chief, Wilfredo Campos. The event took place at the 14th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Honoree Celebration on October 12, 2023.
The annual celebration is a tradition that Delaware Tech has maintained since 2010, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions towards improving the lives of Hispanic and Latino individuals throughout the State of Delaware.
Dr. Lora Johnson, Vice President and Campus Director for Delaware Tech’s Wilmington Campus, expressed her delight in honoring Wilmington Chief of Police and Delaware Tech alumnus Wilfredo Campos, commending his many contributions to not just the Hispanic community but to all residents of Wilmington and across the state of Delaware.
Campos, a Wilmington native and now its first police chief of Hispanic descent, has served the Wilmington Police Department for 26 years. His appointment as the city’s 33rd police chief by Mayor Mike Purzycki in January 2023 marked a significant milestone in the city’s history.
The distinguished chief has held various positions within the city police force during his law enforcement career. He has also served with the United States Army Reserve and remains active with community organizations, serving as a board member of Westside Family Healthcare and Los Jardines Senior Housing.
Delaware Tech President Mark T. Brainard extolled Chief Campos as an exemplary alumnus of the college. He expressed his pride in recognizing Campos, who has devoted his career to protecting the people of Wilmington.
The ceremony also included tributes from the Delaware Congressional Delegation, Governor and Lt. Governor’s offices, New Castle County, and the City of Wilmington, further affirming the broad respect and admiration for Chief Campos.
Expressing his gratitude, Chief Wilfredo Campos thanked the DelTech community for the honor and their continued support to the city of Wilmington and its residents.
Wilmington Mayor Michael Purzycki also congratulated Chief Campos on this well-deserved honor, praising his outstanding performance as the head of a police force committed to public safety.
