Delaware Man Arrested After Fleeing Traffic Stop in Kennett Square

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kennett Square Police Department announced that a resident of Newark, Delaware was arrested after he fled a traffic stop.

Matthew McDermott, age 37, has been charged with Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police, Resisting Arrest, and additional related offenses.

The criminal complaint alleges that on May 21, 2023, at approximately 8:31 PM, while on stationary patrol at the intersection of S. Walnut Street and Birch Street, Officers observed a blue and white motorized scooter, resembling a Vespa, with no tag displayed approaching the stop sign westbound on Birch Street. A traffic stop was initiated in the 200 Block of Birch Street, Kennett Square Borough. When attempting to make contact with the operator of the motorized scooter, the operator started the vehicle and traveled around the Officer, leaving the area and going westbound towards S. Broad Street. Upon further investigation, Officers were able to identify the operator of the motorized scooter as 37-year-old Matthew McDermott of Newark, DE.

The criminal complaint was completed and charges were filed at Chester County Magisterial District Court 15-3-04 on June 1, 2023.
