Construction Scheduled at Night on U.S. 1, Rising Sun Avenue in North Philadelphia

Travel Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that various construction activities will take place on U.S. 1 (City Avenue), U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) and Rising Sun Avenue under a project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct over the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood in Philadelphia.

The work schedules and locations are:

  • Wednesday, January 18, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, left and right lane closures will be in place on northbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) between Monument Road and Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) for conduit installation;
  • Wednesday, January 18, through Friday, January 20, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, periodic right lane closures will be in place on northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Fox Street and 17th Street for viaduct construction;
  • Wednesday, January 18, through Friday, January 20, from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, periodic right lane closures will be in place on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between 17th Street and Fox Street for viaduct construction;
  • Monday, January 23, through Saturday, January 28, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a periodic right lane closure will be in place on northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Fox Street and 17th Street for construction maintenance activities; and
  • Monday, January 23, through Thursday, February 2, from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, periodic right and left weeknight lane closures will be in place on Rising Sun Avenue in both directions between U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) and Wyoming Avenue for conduit installation.

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Stage 5 construction is currently underway on the northbound inner lane of the mile-long Wayne Avenue structure.

South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on the $94.2 million bridge improvement project, which is financed with 80% federal and 20% state funds.
