The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction is scheduled at night next week on Interstate 95 to set a new traffic pattern under the $267.9 million Section BS2 project to reconstruct I-95 at the Bridge Street Interchange in Northeast Philadelphia.
The work schedules and locations are:
- Tuesday, March 7, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, lane closures will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Bridge Street interchanges;
- Tuesday, March 7, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from Aramingo Avenue/Betsy Ross Bridge to northbound I-95 will be closed. Motorists will be directed to use northbound Aramingo Avenue to the northbound on-ramp at Bridge Street;
- Wednesday, March 8, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, lane closures will be in place on southbound I-95 between the Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges;
- Wednesday, March 8, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from southbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange to Aramingo Avenue will be closed. Motorists will be directed to the Bridge Street off-ramp to Aramingo Avenue;
- Thursday, March 9, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on southbound I-95 between the Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges;
- Friday March 10, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on northbound and southbound I-95 between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Bridge Street interchanges; and
- Monday, March 13, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Bridge Street interchanges.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area or use an alternate route because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The travel restrictions will allow crews PennDOT’s contractor to setup a new, temporary traffic pattern and establish a protected work area for construction of a crossover that will be in place during three-plus years of I-95 mainline reconstruction through the Bridge Street Interchange beginning this spring.
Three lanes of traffic will be maintained during peak hours in both directions on I-95 during BS2 construction. The existing northbound I-95 off-ramp to Bridge Street (Exit 27) will close permanently in early spring.
The Section BS2 contract includes significant improvements to the interchange and its ramps, plus replacement of the expansive I-95 viaduct over Bridge Street and Tacony Street in Bridesburg.
I-95 reconstruction currently underway in the median at the northern end of the Bridge Street Interchange, Section BS1, continues through early summer.
