WILMINGTON, DE — Over 70 million Americans face difficulties when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. To meet this growing need, ChristianaCare has launched a new comprehensive sleep wellness center at the Medical Arts Pavilion II, located in the ChristianaCare Newark Campus.

With accreditation from the prestigious American Academy of Sleep Medicine, The ChristianaCare Sleep Wellness Center offers a state-of-the-art, outpatient program that specializes in the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of a wide range of sleep disorders.

ChristianaCare’s seven-bed sleep diagnostic center boasts almost 5,000 square feet of space. The new facility now combines clinical care and diagnostic testing in one location to build upon the success of its predecessor. Board-certified sleep medicine specialists staff the center, offering in-lab and at-home sleep testing. Additionally, a behavioral health specialist provides cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. Virtual and on-site appointments are available, providing convenience and flexibility for patients.

“At the ChristianaCare Sleep Wellness Center, we offer the full range of sleep care services in one place, with the expertise to help people with all kinds of sleep disorders,” said Shilpa Kauta, M.D., medical director of the ChristianaCare Sleep Wellness Center.

“Sleep disorders affect members of every race, socioeconomic class and age group, but despite the high prevalence of sleep disorders, many people remain undiagnosed and untreated,” she said.

National surveys show that more than 60 percent of adults have never been asked about the quality of their sleep by a physician.

“It’s important for people to know that if they have problems related to sleeping, they should talk to their doctor about it, or call us at the Sleep Wellness Center. Sleep disorders can affect overall health—and they are often very treatable.”

The Sleep Wellness Center provides expert, multidisciplinary diagnosis and care for every kind of sleep problem, including:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Restless leg syndrome.
  • Narcolepsy.
  • Parasomnias, such as sleepwalking.

At the Sleep Wellness Center, seasoned staff collaborates with ChristianaCare’s disease-based programs to tailor sleep services for cardiac care, weight loss surgery, and renal transplant care. Their partnership with surgeons to manage hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy is a major milestone in obstructive sleep apnea treatment.

At the Sleep Wellness Center, patients receive an individualised sleep history assessment in conjunction with comprehensive medical background and physical examination. In appropriate cases, a sleep study (polysomnography) is conducted, which monitors and records brain waves, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, breathing, and eye movements.

Poor Sleep Health is a National Problem
According to the National Institutes of Health, out of the 70 million Americans who suffer from sleep-related problems, over 50% may have chronic disorders including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. It’s true, the impact of sleep-related disorders on individuals is undeniable.. These problems lead to people feeling like they are dragging themselves out of bed every morning, day in and day out. Further, the physical toll can lead to many chronic diseases including hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, and, in extreme cases, even cancer.

Unfortunately, in addition to burdening individuals and impairing their quality of life, sleep disorders have broader economic ramifications.. The national economy is set back $100 billion annually due to lost productivity, medical expenses, sick leave, and property damages. Clearly, there is a pressing need for people to take these sleep disorders seriously and take action.

“With information collected through testing, our sleep experts can determine the source of a sleep problem and begin a treatment plan to help patients improve their quality of life,” Kauta said.
