Armed Robbery Foiled by Brave BP Gas Station Clerk, Suspects Still at Large

NEW CASTLE, DE — The Delaware State Police announced they are investigating an attempted armed robbery that took place on Wednesday night at a BP gas station in New Castle.

Detectives state that on May 17, 2023, at approximately 8:07 p.m., two men entered the BP gas station convenience store located at 2038 New Castle Avenue and approached the clerk. One of the suspects demanded that the clerk come out from behind the counter. When the clerk refused, the same suspect pointed a handgun at him and tried to grab him through the counter window. The employee called 9-1-1 to report a robbery, and both suspects fled from the store on foot. Responding troopers attempted to locate the suspects in the surrounding area but neither man was found.

The 44-year-old clerk was not injured. Both suspects had their faces covered at the time and have yet to be identified. Surveillance video and images are not yet available.

The Troop 2 Robbery Unit is actively investigating the incident, and Detective J. Dempsey is requesting the public’s assistance.
