71-Year-Old Arrested for Liquor Store Attempted Robbery

WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police announced the arrest of 71-year-old John Austin of Newark, DE for the attempted robbery of a Wilmington area liquor store on Monday night.

Authorities stated that on March 14, 2023, troopers responded to Clifton Liquors located at 304 Edgemoor Road, Wilmington, for a late reported attempted robbery. The investigation revealed the night prior, on March 13, 2023, at approximately 11:20 p.m., a male suspect approached an employee behind the sales counter with a bag over his hand, implied he had a weapon, and demanded money from the cash register. The employee did not comply, and the suspect fled the scene. No one was injured during this incident.

Through investigative means, John Austin was determined as the suspect in the alleged attempted robbery. On March 15, 2023, Austin was apprehended at his residence in Newark and taken into custody without incident. Austin was transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with Attempted Robbery First Degree (Felony).

Austin was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $60,000 cash bond.
