$1.1 Million Cash-Only Bail: Fatal Shooting Investigation Leads to Arrest and Indictment of Suspect

WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington Police announced the arrest of a 33-year-old man in connection to a May fatal shooting incident.

Kevin Berry has been charged with Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and two counts of Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited.

The criminal complaint alleges that on May 9, at approximately 12:40 p.m., members of the Uniformed Services Division responded to the unit block of Gordon Street, in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, officers located a gunshot victim – 35-year-old Thaddeus Blackman – who was transported to the hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

The case was assigned to Detective Joseph Wicks of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through the course of his investigation, Detective Wicks identified 33-year-old Kevin Berry as a suspect. The case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury on July 10, and an indictment was returned for Berry. On July 18, Berry was taken into custody without incident.

Berry was arraigned and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $1,100,000 cash-only bail.

Information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest is not a declaration of guilt. A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
