HARRISBURG, PA — Governor Tom Wolf took an unprecedented step Friday to reduce gun violence in Pennsylvania by signing an executive order addressing all types of gun violence in communities of every size. The executive order approaches gun violence from both public health and public safety angles through a multifaceted approach that includes boosting prevention programs, increasing data sharing and developing new training.
The executive order was praised by local leaders, legislators and advocates, including the following:
Rep. Stephen Kinsey, Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus Chair
“I am grateful that Governor Wolf has broken the mold in this unprecedented move by jumping to action with this executive order to establish a comprehensive plan to save more lives and keep our communities safe. Governor Wolf laid the foundation with this executive order and it’s now on us as lawmakers to pass this legislation.”
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald
“Governor Wolf’s actions today are common-sense steps that will allow us to address the growing amount of gun violence in our community. I support his efforts to ask the General Assembly to move forward on safe storage legislation, the red flag law, and institution of a state-level universal background check on all gun purchases. Legislative action, alone, isn’t enough and the Governor’s order recognizes that.
“We look forward to supporting these efforts to share data, reduce community gun violence, combat mass shootings, and halt domestic violence-related and self-inflicted shootings. We stand ready to assist in any way we can and thank the Governor for this robust approach to an issue that continues to plague all of our communities.”
Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto
“Gun violence continues to take innocent lives across the United States. Enough is enough. No one in America wants a country where guns make our schools, places of worship and public spaces unsafe. I applaud Governor Wolf for taking executive action to protect Pennsylvanians in the face of opposition to sensible reforms in Harrisburg and in Washington, DC. I stand with the Governor and will continue to work every day to keep our residents safe.”
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney
“I commend Governor Wolf for his recent executive order and his unwavering leadership to advance a much-needed gun reform agenda for the Commonwealth. The gun violence we saw last week in Philadelphia was horrific, and yet another testament to the need for gun control measures that can truly save lives. The City of Philadelphia is devoting tens of millions of dollars toward the implementation of a comprehensive gun violence prevention plan that focuses on the structural and societal issues that lead to violence. But cities cannot solve this epidemic alone. I urge the General Assembly to follow the Governor’s lead and do their part.”
Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse
“I fully support Governor Wolf’s executive order on reducing gun violence in the Commonwealth. The executive order takes a strong multi-faceted approach on this issue that is affecting our communities.”
Shira Goodman, Executive Director of CeaseFirePA
“Governor Wolf is taking much-needed action that will dedicate the power and resources of the Executive Branch to fighting gun violence and making PA safer. We appreciate his actions today and echo his call for the legislature to do its part and pass critical laws like Extreme Risk Protection Orders, background check expansion and granting cities the power to regulate firearms on city property.”
Marybeth Christiansen, Volunteer Pennsylvania State Chapter Lead for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America
“Gun safety advocates across our state have been calling for action to prevent gun violence, and we are so grateful that Governor Wolf listened. There is so much that we must do to keep our communities safe from gun violence, and this executive order is a huge step in the right direction. Now, it’s time for our state and federal lawmakers to listen to their constituents and commit to passing common-sense gun laws.”
