PENNSYLVANIA — Department of Corrections Acting Secretary Laurel Harry announced the recent signing of a Notice of Execution setting April 3, 2023, for the execution of Rahmael Sal Holt, who was sentenced to death in Westmoreland County.

In November 2019, Rahmael Sal Holt was sentenced to death in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the heinous murder of New Kensington police officer Brian Shaw. The tragic incident occurred on November 17, 2017, when officer Shaw carried out a routine traffic stop of a car being driven by Tavon Harper – with Rahmael Sal Holt as a passenger. Holt ran from the stopped car and shot Officer Shaw during a foot pursuit down a secluded lot. It took jurors only hours to unanimously come to the conviction of Rahmael Sal Holt for cold-blooded first-degree murder. As a result, the Harrison Township native was convicted and sentenced to death.

The law provides that when the governor does not sign a warrant of execution within the specified time period, the secretary of corrections has 30 days within which to issue a notice of execution.
