PA Chamber Joins Forces with PA Medical Society, Hospital and Healthsystem Association of PA on #WhyIWearIt Mask Campaign

HARRISBURG, PA — As part of its “Bringing PA Back” initiative, the PA Chamber has partnered with the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) and the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) on a new social media campaign that features employers and medical professionals promoting mask-wearing as a critical component of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 recovery efforts.

#WhyIWearIt encourages business owners, workers and medical professionals to promote images on social media of themselves and their staff wearing masks and holding a sign that provides their main reason for wearing a mask and wanting those who enter their facilities to do the same.

The goal of the campaign is to highlight the state government order requiring individuals to wear masks when entering a public place – noting that implementing mask policies is not a political issue or a personal one, but something that everyone can collectively do to restore both the state’s economy and the public health.

“Employers that are doing their best to safely remain open and protect their livelihoods and local economies have faced a number of challenges in their effort to promote mask-wearing, including meeting resistance from members of the public who believe that businesses are deciding on their own whether to enforce mask-wearing policies,” PA Chamber President and CEO Gene Barr said. “Our new campaign helps these employers spread awareness that they are promoting mask-wearing because they’re being directed to by the state; along with other important reasons – failing to wear masks can result in costly litigation, the loss of a business’s insurance, or even the loss of their license that allows them to remain open.”

“We all want to return to life as normal,” said Lawrence John, MD, president of PAMED and a family physician from Pittsburgh. “For us to do that, it is important that everyone takes the necessary precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19, which includes wearing a mask in public when social distancing isn’t possible. PAMED is honored to join forces with the business community to spread this important message.”
