PITTSBURG, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a virtual public hearing on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM to take testimony from interested parties regarding a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) draft permit for the proposed Shaw Mines Refuse site in Summit and Elk Lick townships, Somerset County.
Heritage Coal & Natural Resources, LLC has proposed new mining-related discharges subject to the Casselman River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). The NPDES draft effluent limitations were published in the Saturday, September 19, 2020 edition of the Pennsylvania BulletinOpens In A New Window.
Heritage Coal & Natural Resources, LLC has applied for this NPDES permit as well as a permit for a new coal refuse disposal area to be built in a location that was previously strip mined. Both permits are currently under review and DEP has not made a final determination on either.
Those wishing to register for the virtual public hearing must contact Lauren Fraley, community relations coordinator, by email at [email protected] or by calling 412-442-4203, at least 24 hours before the hearing. Video demonstrations and screen sharing by witnesses will not be permitted. Testimony will be limited to three minutes. DEP asks that each organization designate one speaker per group and reminds those presenting that time may not be shared or relinquished to others. DEP will equally consider all comments, whether delivered orally during the virtual hearing or submitted in writing. Written comments may be submitted to Bonnie Herbert, permit clerk, at [email protected], and must be received by 4:00 PM on Friday, March 19, 2021.
