Despite the recent cooling off of overall inflation, certain grocery items are still seeing a steady climb in prices. Data compiled by Stacker from the Bureau of Labor Statistics highlighted the top 20 grocery items that experienced the largest price increases over the last month.
From bread to beef, wine to pasta, and even frozen orange juice, consumers might be surprised to see what’s costing them more at the checkout line. Here’s a rundown of some of the key findings:
Whole wheat bread rose by 0.1% over the month, with an annual increase of 7.4%, bringing the cost of a pound to $2.54. Its counterpart, white bread, saw a similar monthly increase but a much steeper annual rise of 12.8%, pushing its per pound cost to $1.97.
In the meat department, beef steaks and ground beef saw monthly increases of 0.2% and 0.3% respectively, with annual changes of 12.3% and 4.5%. This means consumers were paying $10.77 per pound for steak and $5.57 for ground beef in September.
Perhaps surprisingly, spaghetti and macaroni also saw a 0.4% monthly increase, with the annual change reaching 3.9%. This pushed the per-pound cost to $1.41.
Even beverages weren’t spared. Wine (per 1 liter) rose by 0.4% over the month, with an annual change of 1.2%, costing consumers $13.68. Frozen concentrate orange juice saw a significant annual change of 23.4%, despite the same monthly increase as wine.
Among the top 10 items with the most significant monthly increases were navel oranges, pre-packaged bulk ice cream, whole milk, eggs, chocolate chip cookies, potato chips, iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, and grapefruit.
The largest monthly increase was seen in the price of grapefruit, which rose by a staggering 6.8%, bringing the per-pound cost to $1.68. Iceberg and romaine lettuce followed closely behind, with monthly increases of 4% and 5% respectively.
These figures serve as a reminder that while overall inflation may be steadying, specific items in your grocery basket might still be seeing stealthy price hikes. Keep an eye on these figures and shop wisely!
