WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man has been convicted for the brutal murder of a 16-year-old boy, bringing a glimmer of justice to a city scarred by gang violence. Oliver “Butter” Henry, 25, pleaded guilty to Murder 2nd Degree for the killing of Jordan Ellerbe in January 2015, the Delaware Department of Justice announced on March 14, 2024.

Ellerbe’s death had sparked a fierce feud between two rival gangs, Shoot to Kill and Only My Brothers. The ensuing cycle of retaliation led to a terrifying surge in gun violence, resulting in multiple shootings and murders, including the daylight execution of 15-year-old Brandon Wingo.

“The number of young lives thrown away so that guns can live in our communities with our kids is horrifying,” said AG Jennings. He expressed his sympathy for Jordan’s mother and all mothers who fear for their children’s safety amidst the rampant gun violence.

Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos praised the persistent efforts of investigators and partners that led to this significant conviction. He hoped it would bring some solace to the Ellerbe family, knowing that Jordan’s killer will face justice.

Henry was indicted for Ellerbe’s murder in January 2023 after a thorough investigation by the Wilmington Police Department and the DOJ. He now faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years in prison, with the state recommending up to 20 years.

Despite the grim backdrop, there are signs of progress. Since 2020, shootings have declined by 20% statewide, and violent crime in Delaware reached historic lows in 2022, thanks to relentless enforcement efforts by Delaware police and the DOJ. However, the battle is far from over as gun violence continues to pose a grave threat, especially to children, for whom guns are the leading cause of death in the United States.
