Friday Coronavirus Update: 773 Cases and 27 Deaths in Chester County, Statewide Total Is 29,441 Cases from Coronavirus

Chester County health officials have today confirmed 51 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the countywide total to 773 cases and 27 deaths.1 Additionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Health officially confirmed the statewide total has reached 29,441 across all 67 counties, as of April 17,  with a total of 756 deaths. All people are either in isolation at home or being treated at the hospital.

There have been a total of 3,605 Chester County residents who tested negative for the COVID-19 virus to date.2

Statewide Coronavirus (COVID-19) Cases

Statewide, there is a total of 117,932 patients who tested negative for the COVID-19 virus to date. Of the patients who have tested positive, based on statewide numbers, the age breakdown is as follows:3

  • Nearly 1% are aged 0-4;
  • Nearly 1% are aged 5-12;
  • 1% are aged 13-18;
  • 6% are aged 19-24;
  • Nearly 40% are aged 25-49;
  • Nearly 29% are aged 50-64; and
  • 23% are aged 65 or older.

Most of the patients hospitalized are aged 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older. There have been no pediatric deaths to date. More statewide data is available here.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 3,716 resident cases of COVID-19, and 420 cases among employees, for a total of 4,136 at 321 distinct facilities in 35 counties. Out of our total deaths, 398 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

All non-life-sustaining businesses are ordered to be closed and schools are closed statewide through the remainder of the academic year. Currently the entire state is under a stay-at-home order.

Health officials stress the role every person plays in helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Cover any coughs or sneezes with your elbow, not your hands.
  • Clean surfaces frequently.
  • Stay home to avoid spreading COVID-19, especially if you are unwell.
  • If you must go out for a life-sustaining reason, please wear a mask.
