HARRISBURG, PA — State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester, is praising Gov. Josh Shapiro for the budget address he delivered to the state House and Senate on Tuesday.

Shusterman said the governor discussed numerous areas where Pennsylvania can better serve its people. Key points included expanding eligibility and nearly doubling rebates for seniors and people with disabilities under the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, investments in developing Pennsylvania’s workforce, universal free breakfast for students, and a $100 million investment in mental health resources throughout the Commonwealth.

“Governor Shapiro is listening to the concerns of everyday Pennsylvanians,” Shusterman said. “This proposed budget empowers everyone to live happier, healthier lives here in the Commonwealth. In order for Pennsylvania to grow, it must invest in its citizens. This budget ensures that no one is left behind, and I stand ready to support it in the state House.”

The governor’s budget proposal builds on the priorities that House Democrats championed in the 2022-23 enacted budget — which was overwhelmingly passed last year with broad bipartisan support – such as making commitments to education, public safety, PA’s workforce, seniors and the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, she said.

Shusterman said the governor’s budget plan makes sound investments while maintaining fiscal responsibility by assuring that the Rainy Day Fund remains at $5 billion. Further, the budget plan still leaves the commonwealth with a healthy multi-billion-dollar surplus. Additionally, monthly revenues continue to outpace projections.
