On Tuesday, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania released a statement in response to Speaker McCarthy’s plan to cut food assistance for nearly 40,000 people in the state. Fetterman condemned the plan and called it “cruel”. He emphasized that working individuals and families rely on SNAP to make ends meet and that stripping this vital assistance away from them is unacceptable, especially when big bank CEOs have escaped accountability for their actions.
“Speaker McCarthy’s debt default plan would cut food assistance for nearly 40,000 people in Pennsylvania. This is just cruel,” said Fetterman.
Fetterman also expressed concern that imposing such harmful cuts during a time of increasing default risk is reckless, indicating that such matters require a more considered and careful approach. He called for a collaborative, bipartisan resolution to the debate on SNAP, emphasizing the urgent need to address food insecurity in the United States.
“No one I’ve ever met wants to stay on SNAP for life. They need it to make ends meet. I sure didn’t come to Washington to take vital assistance away from working people at the same time big bank CEOs nearly crash the economy and get to jet off to Hawaii scot-free. I cannot in good conscience support a debt ceiling proposal that pushes people into poverty,” Fetterman continued.
“We’re already addressing SNAP in a bipartisan way in the Farm Bill. But with default looming, jamming through harmful cuts to that program is reckless. It’s time to stop playing games and guarantee the full faith and credit of the United States.”
