Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chair of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, released the following statement after the Biden Administration’s recent announcement that it would work across agencies to encourage landlords to increase transparency and fairness in rents and limit junk fees.
“Too often, renters are hit with unexpected junk fees on top of their rent that eat into seniors’ and working families’ monthly budgets,” said Brown. “I applaud the Administration for taking on these fees so that we can bring down one of the biggest costs that Americans face.”
Rental junk fees are extra charges that tenants may encounter, on top of their monthly rent and any other fees, such as deposit or utility payments. These fees can be confusing for some renters as they don’t always make up a significant part of the total cost of renting an apartment. Examples of such fees could include an application fee to weed out offenders or customizations to the renter’s application process, administrative costs for updating the lease, or even a fee just because the lease needs to be modified or renewed. It’s important for tenants to know what rental junk fees they need to pay in order to avoid unexpected expenses when they move in.
