WEST CHESTER, PA — State Senator Andy Dinniman released the following statement regarding the Chester County District Attorney’s opening of a criminal investigation into the Sunoco Mariner East pipelines being constructed through Chester County:
“For years, I’ve stood with and fought alongside Chester County residents whose lives have been upended by the carelessness associated with the Mariner East project. It’s good to see that others seem to be beginning to listen and hopefully, to act.
“The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission appears to be finally taking action. It’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement issued a formal complaint about Sunoco’s failure to adequately address corrosion on its aging pipelines. In addition, the bureau intervened in the residents’ case before the PUC, for the explicit purpose of denying that it ever claimed the 12-inch line was safe.
“In the legislature, we’ve built a strong bipartisan movement to introduce and pass regulations managing pipeline safety and the sharing of vital information.
“And now a criminal investigation is in the works. I welcome further scrutiny and investigation of this project from the PUC, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, District Attorney’s Office, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
“As I’ve stated repeatedly over the past three years, the Mariner East Project must be halted indefinitely to ensure public safety is the top priority.”
