WEST CHESTER, PA — Often described as a key county to watch, Chester County voted Republican in the 2012 Presidential Election, as well as in 2008. However, Democrat Tom Wolf won the county in the 2014 Pennsylvania Governor race against incumbent Tom Corbett, despite Republicans having a massive turnout advantage. Moreover, Chester County continued voting blue in the 2016 Presidential Election, with 52.6 percent of votes going to Hillary Clinton and 43.3 percent for Donald Trump. Which way did Chester County vote on the 2018 Midterm General Election?
“Barring any unforeseen developments, [turning blue] is an inevitable shift,” said John Kennedy, professor of political science at West Chester University, in a recent interview with the Daily Local. “Chester County is a decade behind (the other suburban counties), but given the political forces and Demographic shifts at work, it is inevitable that it will become Democratic. It is the last to fall.”
Moreover, Jessica Weingarten, a political activist who studies voting figures and chairwoman of the non-partisan Indivisible Chester County action group, stated, “I am not surprised that the county is trending Democratic… I’ve been out canvassing for about 30 years, and it’s something I have been seeing more and more over the years. It’s also something that I find when registering voters.”
How Did Chester County Vote?
There was an amazing number of voters for the 2018 Midterm General Election. A total of 236,599 ballots were cast, or 66.22 percent turnout, compared to 156,731 ballots, or 46.70 percent, in the 2014 Midterm General Election. Regardless, the passion was on the Democratic side, swinging Chester County solidly blue. With the exception of several notable outliers, Chester County voted mostly Democrat up and down the ballot. So, the county’s blue streak continues.
