Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) has garnered incredible support for peace; over 10,000 origami peace cranes were collected from people across Berks and Chester Counties. These symbols of hope will be sent to Hiroshima for the G7 Summit. Houlahan passed the cranes to representatives from the Japanese Prefecture of Okinawa who will facilitate their journey to Hiroshima. Demonstrating the power of community and peace-making, the cranes will serve as a poignant reminder of the horrors of war and the need for global cooperation toward peace.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for our community’s outpouring of support for this project,” said Houlahan. “Our goal was to make 1,000 cranes to honor Sadako’s story, and we greatly exceeded that ambitious goal. This project was a way for our community to come together to promote peace around this world event. I look forward to seeing our cranes make it to Hiroshima and to having our community’s hard work in the pursuit of peace on display. I hope the world’s leaders take note of our concern and the desire for peace.”

The idea of sending paper cranes to the G7 summit arose after Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan visited the Children’s Peace Monument in Japan on a Congressional Delegation trip earlier this year. This moving monument features a statue of a large origami crane and thousands of paper cranes, with each one a tribute to the story of Sadako Sasaki. She was a young Japanese girl who died of cancer caused by radiation from the atomic bombings that took place in Hiroshima during World War II. These cranes have since become a powerful symbol of the desire for peace and a world free from the threat of nuclear war.

With this in mind, Congresswoman Houlahan launched an initiative to gather paper cranes from the community. This call to action aims to raise awareness among world leaders attending the G7 summit about the persistent threat of nuclear war that continues to exist in our world. The need for peace is even more pressing in light of Russia’s recent threat to use nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian soil.
