DEVON, PA — Three Chester County residents were recently honored by state Senator Andy Dinniman upon celebrating their 100th birthdays.
Dinniman presented the attending Centenarians with special Senate certificates honoring their long and storied lives, and throughout the event, they shared their experiences.
“All of the community members we [celebrate] have lived amazing lives full of history and knowledge,” Dinniman said. “They can each serve as an eyewitness to a crucial and formative era in our nation’s history. It’s imperative that we not only listen to what they have to say, but put their wisdom into action in our everyday lives,”
The celebration, hosted at Surrey Services for Seniors, focused on the seniors and their inspiring stories on a century of life. They were:
- Irene West – A lifelong native of the Chester area, West was happily married for 55 years. She worked as a home decorating consultant and made a name for herself as a champion-level shuffleboard player. West still has a large collection of trophies from her competitive years.
- Rev. Dr. Theodore “Ted” Horvath – Born in Ohio, Horvath has dedicated a great deal of his life to writing, editing, and reading. He served as an ordained clergyman and has recently delved into genealogy – learning that his late wife was a descendant of the Mayflower.
- John Sommerville – Sommerville was born in Scotland before his family moved to America when he was a baby. He performed in Vaudeville as a singer, and in his later years, met his second wife through church choirs and choral groups. He worked as an irrigation pump salesman, earning him the title “Ace” for his successful marketing skills.
Surrey Services has served as a hub for senior citizens to stay engaged with the community for almost 40 years. The center is accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), one of only approximately 200 centers in the country that have received this accreditation.
