CHESTER COUNTY, PA — The bi-annual Girls on the Run and STRIDE for Boys 5K will be held at 9:00 AM this Saturday, December 7 at Downingtown West High School. The event celebrates the culmination of the girls’ and boys’ 10-week running and self-esteem programs. More than 800 runners and their buddies, volunteers and community members are expected to attend.
“This event embodies the mission of our Y,” says Kathryn Gute, GOTR/STRIDE Program Coordinator of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “The girls and boys not only learn healthy habits with the running, but also to be confident in themselves and respectful of others. The camaraderie they have built over the 10-week programs is clearly visible during the 5K and there is always a moment during which these amazing kids do something so kind and/or supportive that it brings a tear to my eye.”
The Girls on the Run and STRIDE for Boys programs focus on helping girls and boys improve their emotional and physical health, as well as build character and self-esteem in order to help them become strong, confident adults.
“My child really grew this year,” said a parent of a Girls on the Run participant. “Girls on the Run helped her confidence, she made more friends and learned how to stay healthy.”
There is still time to register or volunteer if you wish to join the hundreds of girls and boys, as well as their buddies and community runners for this inspirational run.
