DOYLESTOWN, PA — Fred Beans Automotive Group has been named among the Philadelphia Business Journal‘s 2021 Healthiest Employers in the Greater Philadelphia Region. The Doylestown-based company is one of only five “large” organizations, those with 1500 or more employees, to be a finalist for the 2021 Healthiest Employers list, which recognizes Greater Philadelphia companies that emphasize and integrate employee wellness into their corporate missions. Locally, Fred Beans operates Ford and Lincoln dealerships in West Chester, a Ford dealership in Exton and a Volkswagen dealership in Devonall with automotive services. It also has an AutoRent car rental site in West Chester.

Beth Beans Gilbert, Fred Beans Automotive Group vice president, explained that making wellness part of the Fred Beans culture was a strategic move on the part of company management. “We know both physical and mental health impact employee performance and satisfaction,” she said. “It may seem unusual for an automotive company to invest in health and wellness programming, but it makes sense. When our employees feel good, they transfer that energy into their interactions and have greater success.”

Fred Beans Automotive Group solidified its commitment to health and wellness several years ago with the hiring of a dedicated wellness coordinator, Andrea Volm. She oversees a range of healthy living initiatives, from information-rich “Lunch and Learns” to incentives encouraging preventative health screenings, and even company-wide 30-Day Fitness Challenges.

“Not only has management provided the funding and other resources necessary to develop and implement the many programs offered, but the leadership team takes advantage of them and encourages participation,” said Volm. “In fact, Fred Beans often engages in our Fitness Challenges and even did 100 push-ups for a recent milestone birthday.”

When the pandemic halted much of the in-person programming in 2020, Volm encouraged employees and their families to participate in yoga and fitness classes via Zoom. She and Fred Beans management have always aimed to adapt to employees’ preferences and needs to ultimately increase participation and get results. “Over the years, we have celebrated individual milestones in terms of weight loss, and the not-so-obvious transformations in mental and emotional well-being,” said Beans Gilbert.

Fred Beans added, “I always have said we are only as good as our people. Our health and wellness programming has become an important means of caring for our employees and helping them bring their best selves to work every day. I believe this sets us apart, and the recognition we are receiving for it will continue to help us attract great talent.”

The Healthiest Employers list is compiled annually in the Greater Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Business Journal, which uses an online survey to measure a company’s wellness programs using Springbuk Health analytics. Companies completing the survey are scored on their wellness program’s culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis.

Being a finalist in the Philadelphia Business Journal‘s 2021 Healthiest Employer list is just one of several accolades Fred Beans Automotive Group has received in the last few years. The Philadelphia Business Journal named Fred Beans Automotive Group one of its Best Places to Work in 2019 and 2020. The company also was recognized among the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Family-Owned Business Award winners in 2019, and Fred Beans was among the Most Admired CEOs named by the Philadelphia Business Journal in 2019.
