FORBES ROAD, PA — Military veterans interested in beekeeping and honey production are invited to enroll by March 11, 2022, in Bee Bootcamp classes in Allegheny, Chester, Dauphin, and Luzerne counties.

Bee Bootcamp is a comprehensive, hands-on training program that provides participants with the basic knowledge to establish and maintain a beehive. It is offered at no cost to eligible veterans. Classes are held one weekend day per month from April through October.

More than just a beekeeping course, Bee Bootcamp offers the opportunity for veterans of all branches and eras to work together toward a common goal of establishing and maintaining healthy hives, supporting pollinators, and enjoying the camaraderie.

Bee Bootcamp students must first enroll in Michigan State University’s Heroes to Hives online training. The course is free, and enrollees will complete about 3 hours of video-based training per month. Then, at each in-person Bee Bootcamp class, veterans will practice what they’ve learned online at demonstration hives. Bee Bootcamp is a science-based beehive management course led by experienced beekeeper instructors through a partnership of the PA State Beekeeping Association and PA Veteran Farming Project.
