KIRKWOOD, PA — This Saturday, July 16, Chester Water Authority (CWA) and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) celebrate Lakes Appreciation Month with a kayak sunset paddle on the Octoraro Reservoir. The event takes place from 3 PM to 10 PM at The Octoraro Reservoir Boat Launch at 212 Spruce Grove Road, Kirkwood, PA 17536. This inaugural event was coordinated by PFBC District Officer J. Schmidt.

When the original location for the event became unavailable, CWA stepped in for the community to ensure the public would have the opportunity to celebrate Lake Appreciation Month on the water. A great time is planned for all. This family-friendly event is open to the public.

While majestic all year around, the Octoraro Reservoir, or Octoraro Lake as the locals call it, is a fun, summer day trip for those living in Lancaster, Chester and Delaware counties. From fishing and boating to hiking and bird-watching, there is something for every member of the family to love.

For Saturday’s Lakes Appreciation event, from 3 PM to 7 PM, visitors will be able to enjoy food vendors, meet local environmental organizations, talk with representatives from the PFBC, and learn more about the SAVE CWA effort to stop the privatization of public water. Children under 12 will have an opportunity to learn to fish in a Kiddie Fishing Pond.  As a special and unusual treat, visitors will get to learn how to prepare and will be able to sample grilled snakehead catfish, an invasive aquatic species in the reservoir.

From 8 PM to 10 PM, kayakers will take to the water for a sunset paddle. This will be the first time in the Octoraro Reservoir’s history that kayakers will have this opportunity.  It will be a spectacular evening exploring the lake. Bring your own kayak and the launch is free of charge. If you wish to rent a kayak, a limited quantity is available through Jim Neary’s Bait and Tackle. Contact them early for your reservation.

A special thank you to all who have worked so hard to make the event a fun, safe, and educational time for all including: Jim Neary’s Bait and Tackle, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Chester County Conservation District, Donegal Trout Unlimited—Veterans’ Service Partnership, Lancaster Clean Water Partners, Lancaster Conservancy, Lancaster County Conservation District, Octoraro Watershed Association, The Oxford Region Volunteer Environmental Advisory Council, PA Game Commission, Penn State Lower Susquehanna Master Watershed Steward Program, Southern Lancaster County Farmer Sportsman’s Association, Stroud Water Research Center, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary—Flotilla 19-04.
