CHADDS FORD, PA — Looking for something fun, educational, and exciting to do with your family Brandywine Battlefield Park is hosting its second annual Family Fun Day on August 19, 2023, from 11 AM to 3 PM! This day-long event promises to be a memorable experience for children and adults alike. Attendees can expect blacksmithing, carpentry, flax working, and bobbin lace demonstrations as well as colonial games, tours of historic sites, and more. And this year, the park is partnering with Teachers’ Teammates, a non-profit organization that aids under-resourced schools, to provide free supplies for teachers and students. So, come out and support a noble cause while enjoying a day of fun!
The highlight of the Family Fun Day is the colonial demonstrations. For history buffs and enthusiasts alike, watching skilled artisans recreate the lifestyles and trades of colonial America is a sight to see. The park offers demonstrations in carpentry and blacksmithing, which are guaranteed to fascinate kids and adults alike. And this year, two new demonstrations, flax working and bobbin lace, were added to the list. Witness the intricate processes of producing materials essential to colonial life and learn about the fascinating and essential role of these crafts in that time period.
In addition to the colonial demonstrations, the Chester County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting colonial games for children of all ages. These games offer a fun way for kids to learn about colonial America and participate in activities that date back to the 18th century. Children will love playing games, such as “Tug of War,” “Pin the Tail on the Donkey,” and other popular games from this era. Kids-friendly tour guides will be available to answer all their questions and make the day’s experience memorable.
For those interested in history, Brandywine Battlefield Park offers tours of two historic sites – The Ring House and The Gilpin House. The Ring House was General George Washington’s headquarters during the famous Battle of Brandywine in 1777, which marked a significant turning point in the American Revolution. The Gilpin House, on the other hand, is a stunning example of colonial Architecture. Tours of these sites start at particular times, so make sure you time your visit to ensure you don’t miss out!
And while you are there, why not support Teachers’ Teammates’ mission? The organization’s goal is to provide free supplies to under-resourced schools in Delaware County. You can contribute by donating goods such as pencils, markers, notebooks, and so on, which will be repurposed by teachers and students alike. Your making donations to Teachers’ Teammates will help provide educational supplies for children who would otherwise go without.
And to top it all off, Helen Sipala’s latest book, “Buttercups and Gratitude: My Illustrated Journey with Andrew Wyeth,” will be available for purchase. This beautifully illustrated book is a must-have for art lovers who appreciate the work of legendary artist Andrew Wyeth. The book is available for purchase by cash or check, so make sure to bring along some money!
