WILMINGTON, DE – The Delaware Division of the Arts’ Mezzanine Gallery is presenting “Odd Little Creatures,” an exhibition by Wilmington artist Vik Hart. This captivating collection is on view through August 30, 2024. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 12, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., offering guests the opportunity to meet the artist and explore his imaginative work.

Hart, a self-taught artist, began his artistic journey at Redux Studios in Charleston, South Carolina. Since relocating to Delaware in 2021, “Odd Little Creatures” marks his first solo exhibition in the state. This series delves into the lives of small, whimsical creatures inhabiting imagined worlds, showcasing their unique adaptations to various environments. Hart’s use of quick, gestural lines imparts a spontaneous feel to his creations, while his distinctive color palette enhances their otherworldly charm.

Hart’s focus on world-building and lore stems from his childhood passion for drawing fantastical monsters and creatures. He aims to create illustrations that invite viewers to envision the unseen stories beyond the paper’s edge. “The idea for this series came from the realization that many works of fiction set in alternate worlds focus on grandiose creatures of myth, things like dragons and genies,” says Hart. “I wanted to focus on the smaller things that live in the world, the tiny creatures that hide behind trees and live under rocks. With these pieces I want to highlight a sense of the familiar and the fantastical in a world I have been cultivating with my artwork since 2017.”

Visitors to the Mezzanine Gallery can explore Hart’s enchanting worlds weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery is located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the whimsical and detailed universe of Vik Hart’s “Odd Little Creatures.”
