WASHINTON, D.C. — Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) has issued a call to high school students in Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District, encompassing all of Chester County and the southern portion of Berks County, to showcase their artistic talents in the annual Congressional Art Competition.
Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives organizes this contest to recognize and celebrate the creative abilities of high school students nationwide. The winning piece from each district earns a prestigious spot in the U.S. Capitol, where it is displayed for a year along with the victorious artwork from other congressional districts across the country.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, March 14, and entries must be submitted through each student’s art teacher. Detailed instructions and requirements can be found on Houlahan’s website.
“As a former educator, I am truly filled with pride each year during the Congressional Art Competition,” said Houlahan. “This competition is a wonderful reminder that the ‘A’ in ‘STEAM’ education stands for something near and dear to my heart – art! I encourage all eligible students to submit their original artwork, and I eagerly anticipate seeing the chosen piece displayed in the Capitol.”
The competition specifies that artwork must be two-dimensional and, when framed, should not exceed 26 inches in height, width, or 4 inches in depth. Additionally, no framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds.
Accepted mediums for the artwork include paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor), drawings (colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal), collages (must be two-dimensional), prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints), mixed media (use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor), computer-generated art, and photographs.
This competition provides an exceptional platform for young artists to gain recognition and display their work in a significant public space. For students interested in participating or seeking more information on the annual Congressional Art Competition, they can submit a form on Houlahan’s website. To confirm eligibility based on residency in Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District, they can visit house.gov.
The Congressional Art Competition encourages young artists to express themselves creatively and contributes to promoting the importance of arts in education. As the entries start pouring in, all eyes will be on Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District to see which talented young artist will have the honor of representing their community in the U.S. Capitol.
