Owen J. Middle Teacher Wins National Prize

SOUTH COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, PA — The NHL and NHLPA, in partnership with EVERFI and SAP, have announced the winner of Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher contest, and Mrs. Jennifer Armstrong, a Philadelphia Flyers fan and Owen J. Roberts Middle School teacher, was one of only three national finalists! Mrs. Armstrong will receive $10,000 worth of new classroom technology as a prize.

Joan Kilban, a die-hard Boston Bruins fan and a fifth-grade teacher at Plymouth River Elementary School in Hingham, Mass., was the winner of the North America-wide contest. Megan Campedel, a Pittsburgh Penguins fan who teaches eighth-grade science at Avonworth Middle School in Pittsburgh was also a finalist. As the winner, Kilban will receive $30,000 in new technology for her classroom.

Additionally, all three finalists and members of their school communities received a surprise virtual visit from players on their favorite teams — Boston Bruins forward Charlie Coyle, Philadelphia Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust.

Gritty, the Flyers mascot

In February, the Philadelphia Flyers and Gritty, the Flyers mascot, surprised Mrs. Armstrong’s class with a very animated visit for winning the first phase of the national NHL contest to be awarded Most Valuable Teacher for the month of February!

The Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher contest was launched in January to celebrate teachers making a difference across North America. A field of 36 dynamic teachers was narrowed down to three finalists in a public vote and a second vote to determine the winner took place from May 4-8 during Teacher Appreciation Week.

The NHL and NHLPA’s Future Goals program powered by EVERFI combines STEM learning with a hockey-based curriculum for elementary and middle-school-aged students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL and NHLPA have expanded the program to be free remotely for families who are now learning together from home.
