WEST GROVE, PA — The Avon Grove High School (AGHS) aerial drone team competed at the 2023 Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation Aerial Drones Competition Dragonfly Championship in Fairmont, West Virginia, May 19-20, receiving the Excellence and Programming awards. The awards were given at the event following two days of intensely competitive and highly successful aerial robotics and technical skills performance.

The awards were presented to the AGHS team for demonstrating expert-level proficiency in flight operations strategy, autonomous programming, teamwork, project management, communication, professionalism and special community outreach attributes.

The championship was the highlight of the 2022-2023 season for the students, who worked together as a team to develop an aviation strategy for aerial robots to perform in various field conditions either operated by a pilot or with pre-coded commands. Students exemplified unwavering curiosity, perseverance, resilience, personal commitment and teamwork. Throughout the season, the team collaborated to leverage real-world engineering, programming and aviation skills with hands-on project-based learning.

“Many of the students plan to pursue careers in computer science, technology, engineering or related fields,” said AGHS teacher and team advisor Stephanie Shrake.

The team is looking ahead to next season, with workshops, community outreach, scrimmage and qualifying tournament events scheduled from September 2023 through March 2024. To follow the team in their upcoming season and to see highlights from the previous season, follow @ag.hackclub on Instagram.
