WEST CHESTER, PA — Michelle Lozowski, a kindergarten teacher at West Chester Friends School, has been named the 2018 Teacher of the Year by the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance. The annual award recognizes a teacher working in the Brandywine Watershed who dedicates their time to helping students develop an appreciation for the environment and spending time outdoors.
BRC education coordinator Julia Steiner said, “Michelle can be found at school early in the morning, setting up the outdoor classroom–an urban oasis in the middle of the West Chester borough.” Steiner noted that students’ outdoor learning includes writing stories, creating art with natural materials, reading to the resident hens and, of course, environmental studies. In addition, “Michelle organizes off-site field trips to local open spaces, and these are some of her favorite science lessons,”
Lozowski recently organized a peer gathering for the Friends Council on Education during which early childhood educators presented collaborative ways to integrate nature in their curriculums.
“BRC is proud to honor teachers like Michelle who provide experiential, science-based learning opportunities,” said Steiner.
