West Chester University to Host 16 Spring Commencement Ceremonies

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University is dividing its commencement ceremonies into 16 separate services to provide more intimate programs for more than 3,300* spring graduates and their guests. The main campus ceremonies take place between Friday, May 13, and Sunday, May 15, in Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall in Philips Memorial Building (700 South High Street, West Chester, 19383) and Hollinger Field House (150 University Avenue, West Chester, 19383). 

There are 2,470* undergraduate students will participate in ceremonies organized by department and College. Also, two ceremonies for the 713 graduate-level candidates will take place on Saturday, May 14: The 3 p.m. ceremony in Hollinger for graduates of the Colleges of Business and Public Management, Health Science, Sciences & Mathematics, Arts & Humanities, and the School of Music; and the 4 p.m. ceremony in Asplundh for graduates of the College of Education and Social Work.

In addition, two special ceremonies recognize specific graduating populations with the awarding of special stoles or cords. This is the 30th year that WCU will host a Kente celebration, which affirms and celebrates the cultural identity of students who identify as Alaskan Native, Asian and Asian American, Black and African American, Caribbean American, Desi American, Latina/o/x, Native American, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and Multiracial. The Kente service takes place Thursday, May 12, at 6 p.m. in Hollinger. And for the second year, the WCU Honors College will hold a service on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. in Asplundh.

The procession for each hour-long ceremony begins 15 minutes prior to the ceremony start time. Tickets are required. WCU’s Philadelphia Campus will host two commencement ceremonies for May and August 2022 graduates on Monday, May 16, at the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing. The undergraduate ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. and the graduate ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. and both will be livestreamed. The procession for each hour-long ceremony begins 15 minutes prior to the ceremony start time. Tickets are required for guests three years of age and older.

Officials state that commencement exercises will impact traffic in the area surrounding the University beginning late afternoon on Friday, May 10, when the first of the 16 programs begins. Motorists are being advised to allow extra time when traveling during these times. Travelers can check current road conditions by visiting the MyChesCo Traffic Center.

  • Combined with the numbers of graduates from the University’s fall commencement last December, WCU has graduated a total of 4,640 students (both undergraduate and graduate) for the academic year 2021-2022 (3,527 undergraduates and 1,113 graduates).
