DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Interfaith Action Community and the Lionville Community YMCA are inviting the community to attend the Walk in Celebration of Unity in Diversity beginning at 2pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the Lionville Community YMCA. The 1.5-mile event seeks to bring people together to celebrate diversity and to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to opposing discrimination in all forms.
“As our Chester County Interfaith Action Community discussed the many divisive issues within our community during our monthly meetings, we decided it was important for us, as an organization made up of many different faith traditions, to serve as a positive example of people working together to build a strong community,” says Kathy Metzler, a driving force in the organization of this event.
The Interfaith Action Community represents 15 area faith communities as well as the West Chester Religious and Spiritual Council.
“We are walking to show the world that a multitude of diverse faith and non-faith traditions can come together to create a narrative that celebrates and honors diversity and difference,” says Rabbi Jon Cutler of Congregation Beth Israel of Chester County.
Immediately following the walk is a community picnic at the Lionville Community YMCA including featured speakers, local food trucks, music and youth activities, including a bounce house. Featured speakers include Rabbi Jon Cutler, Brandyn Campbell and Justin Brown. There is no cost for the event and all are invited to attend.
“We are excited to partner with the Interfaith Action Community,” says Andrew Holets, executive director of the Lionville Community YMCA. “Our character and community are well-served when we demonstrate the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in an inclusive manner. The Y believes we are stronger when we celebrate our differences and unique abilities and when we give every individual the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.”
The IAC and the YMCA of Greater Brandywine unite to remind individuals who may be experiencing the pain of discrimination that they are not alone and that hate has no home here.
